- Do not take it personally, know that this is not a personal attack and it is only this persons opinion.
- Stay open minded, do not get defensive,
- Know that the disruptive behaviour could have been triggered by many different reasons and more often than not these may have been triggered before your training even started.
- Keep calm, take a deep breath or a drink of water to gather your thoughts and calm your mind.
- Think of how you can give great service to this person.
- Think of this as a positive experience as it will help you grow and develop as a trainer.
- Know that you are a great trainer and that you will do everything you can to solve the problem.
- Deal with the disruptive behaviour immediately otherwise it could get worse and more difficult for you to deal with.
- Take the person to the side and speak with them one to one rather than in front of the rest of the group.
- Listen to them fully and let them share their thoughts and feelings before you say anything.
- Get to the heart of the problem and encourage them to come up with solutions that will change how they are feeling and change their mindset and focus.
- Know that every situation you will have to deal with will be different and that every person's emotions and behaviour will be different. So listen to what they are saying and show that you really care how they are feeling.
- Always ensure that you are looking after the majority of your trainees and if the disruptive person is having a negative effect on all of your group then you MUST deal with it immediately. Know that the longer you leave it the worse it will get.
- If one approach is not working with this person then try a different one. Do not keep trying the same approach.
- To avoid disruption, at the beginning of the training set a code of honour. This will be a set of rules/ guidelines that your trainees will agree to. Make it fun so it is not too serious. Here are some examples of what you can put in the code of honour.
- I will listen with an open mind.
- I will give 100% throughout this training.
- I will participate in all exercises and discussions.
- I will think of my other trainees at all times.
- I will switch my mobile phone off and if I don't and it goes off I will pay £10 to the trainer's charity.
- Etc
By doing this you will have everyone to buy in to your rules at the beginning of the session and you will be amazed as to how much respect you will gain for doing this.
